What Is Parent-Child Interaction Therapy, and How Does It Work?

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is a proven, research-backed treatment designed for young children—most often between the ages of 2 and 7—who experience challenges such as frequent tantrums, aggressive behavior, defiance, or difficulty managing emotions. Created by Dr. Sheila Eyberg, PCIT is supported by decades of research and centers on strengthening the bond between parent and child while helping caregivers respond to behavior in a calm, consistent, and supportive way.

One of the key features that sets PCIT apart is its live coaching approach. During sessions, a certified PCIT therapist observes interactions between the parent and child from behind a one-way mirror and offers real-time guidance through a discreet earpiece worn by the parent. This interactive method allows caregivers to practice effective parenting skills in the moment, building confidence and lasting positive change.

Why PCIT?

PCIT Is Delivered in Two Phases

Child-Directed Interaction (CDI)
In this phase, parents learn to follow their child’s lead during play while using targeted skills that promote warmth, positive attention, and cooperation. The focus is on strengthening the emotional connection between parent and child and building a foundation of trust.

Parent-Directed Interaction (PDI)
During this phase, parents are guided on how to give clear, effective instructions, establish consistent limits, and follow through with predictable consequences. These strategies help decrease challenging behaviors and improve the child’s ability to listen and comply.

The structured nature of PCIT ensures that caregivers gain practical, easy-to-use tools that can be applied at home, in school settings, and in everyday life. As families move through treatment, they often experience fewer behavior concerns, reduced parenting stress, and stronger overall family functioning. PCIT has been shown to be particularly effective for children with ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, and those at risk for behavioral challenges.
